Blue Jays open weekend series as favourites against Athletics

The Toronto Blue Jays will be looking to gain ground in the AL wild card standings when they open a three-game weekend series with the visiting Oakland A’s on Friday night as -135 favourites on the MLB odds at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.

Toronto enjoyed a day off on Thursday after posting a 5-4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles that marked the team’s fourth win in five outings going into Friday night’s matchup at the Rogers Centre.

While the Blue Jays’ recent surge has not enabled them to close the gap on the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays, it has helped them stay in the hunt for the second AL wild card. However, the team still has plenty of work to do in its bid to see postseason action for a second straight year. Toronto currently trail four teams in the AL wild card standings, including the A’s. And with time running out on their regular season schedule, the Blue Jays continue to slide on the World Series odds, where they now sit as a distant +6600 wager.

The upside for the team is its recent success against the A’s. The Blue Jays split a four-game series in Oakland back in early May, scoring 19 total runs while closing out that set with back-to-back wins. That lifted the Blue Jays to 8-2 in their past 10 meetings with the A’s, including a three-game sweep of Oakland in their last visit to Rogers Centre two years ago.

The team also saw George Springer return to action on Wednesday after being forced out of Tuesday’s 4-2 loss to the Orioles due to injury. However, the Blue Jays slugger has continued to struggle at the plate during his injury-plagued debut in Toronto, collecting just two hits in 10 at-bats since his return to action earlier this week after missing the second half of August with a knee injury.

Springer’s woes have contributed to the Blue Jays’ recent struggles to generate offence. Toronto has mustered more than three runs in just three of its past 13 contests, spawning an 11-2 run for the UNDER at online betting sites.

The Blue Jays will likely need to rediscover their offensive touch against the A’s, who arrive in town for Friday’s series opener as +115 underdogs. The A’s improved to 4-1 in their past five games with an 8-6 win in Detroit on Thursday afternoon, and have now tallied 23 total runs over their past three contests. Oakland’s surge has lifted the team to third place in the AL wild card standings, three games up on the Blue Jays.
